When having casual sex or “one-night stands” – even or especially while on vacation – it is strongly advised to practice Safer Sex at all times, i.e. to use condoms during intercourse (vaginal or anal) and not to let semen or vaginal blood get into your mouth when having oral sex.
Condoms are also a reliable protection against unwanted pregnancies.
But Safer Sex is also important when starting a new relationship. In this situation, both can take an HIV test after three months of practicing Safer Sex. If the result is negative for both partners and both are absolutely faithful, Safer Sex practices may be discontinued.
But, in the event of a fling outside the relationship, rules of Safer Sex must be maintained again. And, an earlier test does not say anything about whether or not an infection has taken place since that time.
If there is any doubt as to whether the partner is faithful or whether she/he observes Safer Sex rules when engaged in sex with others, it is advised to insist on Safer Sex in the relationship.
Particular caution is advised when one of the partners takes drugs using needles.
In the case of symptoms that suggest a sexually transmissible infection, you must go and get a medical diagnosis.
